Build Knowledge
1. The kookaburra in the story didn't fit in with his group so he tried to find other birds to have as friends.
He found:
Seagulls were rude
Crows were too loud
Emus were too quick
Cockatoos were wild
Pelicans were greedy
and Magpies were just plain mean.
Think of other birds you could add to this story and add a word to describe their behaviour.
2. Listen to this soundscape of Australian birds. Write down three words that describe the sounds or the feelings you have while you are listening.
3. A noun is a word we use to describe a person, place or thing. A collective noun is the word we use to describe a group of people, animals or things.
The collective noun for kookaburras is - "A riot of Kookaburras".
Do you think this is a good name for a group of kookaburras? Why/Why not?
This poster shows 'A riot of kookaburras', but it doesn't seem like the kookaburras are having
much of a riot? Design your own poster for a riot of kookaburras.
You can either draw this, create a word document or draw on 3D paint.
4. Research task:
Find out what the collective nouns are for each of the other birds in the book: Seagulls / Crows / Emus / Cockatoos / Pelicans / Magpies.
To do this, visit www.google.com and enter the search term "what is the collective noun for ......"
Sometimes there are more than one - so choose one that you like best!
If you like, you could create a visual dictionary, with the collective nouns and then a picture next to it. I would love to see what you come up with!
